Faroe Islands:
Birds, Landscape
& Solstice Festival
June 25 - July 2, 2018
7 Participants
(SOLD OUT)
“The Faroe Islands? Yeah, they are close to Egypt, right?” …not exactly.
If you don’t know where the Faroe Islands are, that’s OK. To be honest, it’s not all that strange, considering the total landmass of the 18 islands that make up the Faroe Islands is about 6,500 smaller than the USA, and their population 28,000 times smaller than China’s. The fact you don’t know where the Faroe Islands are located just goes to show, perhaps, that even though the planet has been well charted and documented, there are still new discoveries to be made.
Nested between Iceland and Norway, the location is a gem for photography. During this workshop you will have a chance to photograph birds (puffins, gannets, and more), sheep, local people (the population is about 50,000), the landscape (islands, mainland), and the amazing houses (roof made of grass).
We are visiting the Faroes around the summer solstice, the longest days of the year. You can only dream about getting these sunsets and sunrises lasting forever. With lighthouses and cliffs in the foreground, or people celebrating the Solstice Festival, we will take you to the “local” spots. We will travel by ferry to remote islands, by road to secret places and by foot to access these unique viewpoints.
We are going to spend time on Mykines island, the place for puffins and gannets. You will be able to walk by these amazing birds, a real treat, especially when you are not surrounded by tourists. We are also visiting the Kalsoy, its dramatic steep cliffs, idyllic valleys, and the charming settlements of Húsar, Mikladalur, Syðradalur and Trøllanes.
The workshop is lead by two creative photographers, Ólavur Frederiksen, resident of the Faroes and Oliver Klink, a world acclaimed fine art photographer. You will join a small selected group of avid photographers, who want to experience something unique, understand the light, and capture beyond classic tourist images. The territory we will cover is small, but the local knowledge is critical to get you to the right places at the right time, to teach you how to make powerful images of wildlife and landscape and capture the culture of the “locals” during their Solstice festival.
We are excited to host you in the Faroes. See you in June … Oliver & Ólavur
Note: Make sure you read the logistics tab below, so you know where and when to fly.
