Stylizing – Mix Styles

The Stylizing-Mix Styles class has a broad appeal. We teach styles such as ethereal, abstract, we add skills with thick paint and impasto techniques. The emphasis is on broadening your skills so you can find your own style. There is one private session, where you get invaluable feedback on how you are progressing.

Stylizing and painting will open venues that you thought were unreachable with your photography. You will learn new tools to add creativity, flair, light, stories to your images. You might think learning this knowledge as a departure from photography, but on the contrary it is a new way to interpret your images … with photographic and artistic views. Learn, practice, feedback, inspiration.

Class: 5 sessions (4 group sessions, 1 private coaching sessions)
Goal: Learn four new painterly styles (Abstract Landscape, Impasto, Ethereal, Composite, Thick paint)
- description in Painterly Style tab

During the session, we will demonstrate the painterly style and give you feedback on your images painted “with the style”. At the end of the session, you will have learned the intangibles of controlling your brushes, mixing paint, and subtleties to become an “artist”.
At the end of the class, you will have your images exhibited in a “virtual gallery”, where you’ll give you receive feedback from your classmates.

The private coaching session (with two instructors) give you the chance to brainstorm with the instructors on where you can take your images and create your own personal style. We will answer your questions, review your images, brainstorm on ideas, and teach additional knowledge to move your skills to the next level. You will be able to leverage two instructors.

Stylizing and painting will open venues that you thought were unreachable with your photography. You will learn new tools to add creativity, flair, light, stories to your images. You might think learning this knowledge as a departure from photography, but on the contrary it is a new way to interpret your images … with photographic and artistic views.

As photographers, we strive to “make” images that are different and exhume a “personal” feel. Where do you start? Where do you get inspiration? How do you go about making unique images? What tools do you need?

The Stylizing classes are about “discovering” your inner artistry and teaching you the tools that will turn your images into masterpieces. Each class will open new frontiers and get you closer to a “painterly photographer”.

The Stylizing – Teaser, is self-explanatory. If you want to tip toe in the world of stylizing, this is the class for you. Over 3 sessions, we will teach you how to use a set of tools (Corel Painter Essentials v7) and to process your images with a new workflow. You receive step by step explanations and hands-on exercises to turn your images into a painterly photograph. If you plan on continuing down the stylizing path, you will join the Stylizing-Foundation class.

The Stylizing-Foundation is the beginning of your journey. You will learn the basics to create stylized images from the full version of Painter (Painter 2021). We make the learning experience unintimidating by focusing on the tools that blend photography and painting. We do have hands-on exercises that get you up to speed with the use of brushes, textures, and painterly strokes. Included in the class is a private lesson, where we coach you and give you feedback on your newly found skills. The Stylizing-Foundation class is the jumping point to the exciting additional classes.

We offer three options to keep learning new skills. We are using a well-known methodology that painters are embracing: Inspire – Teach - Practice – Review. Each class focuses on a “painterly style”. You receive a base image (“the practice image”), a style to replicate (“the model”), instruction delivered thru hands-exercises/how to videos and detailed cheat sheet (“the recipes”), and candid feedback when you mimic the style on your own images (“your master piece”).
You can take the classes in any orders, after you have gained the foundation knowledge first.

The Stylizing-Mix Styles have a broad appeal. We teach styles such as ethereal, abstract, we add skills with thick paint and impasto techniques. The emphasis is on broadening your skills so you can find your own style. There is one private session, where you get invaluable feedbacks on how you are progressing.

The Stylizing-Portraiture Styles is an exciting class, as we tackle turning portraits (photographs) into exciting painterly rendition. We teach another set of styles such as classic, contemporary, loose painting, abstract and ways to refine your brush strokes. The emphasis is to inspire you to combine styles and create unique portraits. During the one private session, you will receive additional inspiration specific to your “painterly photographs”.

The Stylizing-In Depth focuses both on learning new styles and be coached, a critical part of your journey. Over seven sessions you will master your newly found skills. You will gain deeper knowledge and a better understanding of becoming a “painterly photographer”. The continuation class is the Stylizing-Portraiture, where you will learn how to tackle painterly portraiture.

The Stylizing-Live is about creating a painterly image in 2 hours, getting feedback, and comparing your work with a community of like-minded “painterly artists”. The instructors will demonstrate steps to one possible rendition, explain the choices made, how the brushes were used, and give tips/tricks. When the demo is done, it is your turn to paint. We will have checkpoints each 20 minutes, where all the students show their work in progress, we give feedback and provide additional tips. Then we continue “painting” until the next checkpoints and eventually the final rendition. Each session is unique, as we use different set of brushes and textures, techniques related to the style, and tips and tricks that you can apply to your own images.

1. Abstract landscape paintings
Abstract landscape paintings are both abstract and a landscape. This method of painting can involve a great deal of creative expression either by altering scenery that exists in real life or by creating an imagined setting. Some artists abstract the landscape by breaking it down into simple colors and shapes.

2. Impasto paintings
Impasto is a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface in very thick layers, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. Impasto provides texture; the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas.

3. Ethereal paintings
The word “Ethereal” is defined as an adjective, describing something:
1. Light, airy, or tenuous: an ethereal world created through the poetic imagination.
2. Extremely delicate or refined ethereal beauty.

4. Composite paintings
Composite paintings in Corel Painter refer to images that were constructed from two or more different photos or other Painter images. Most composites are done by layering images one on top of one another and then masking out the unwanted pieces using different methods.

5. Thick Paint paintings
Thick Paint brushes in Corel Painter offer a natural-media experience with look and feel of thick paint and traditional impasto. They can help an artist to paint beautiful images by adding depth, texture, or movement regardless of whether he or she is creating traditional art, photo art, or illustration.
Thick Paint brushes apply paint that you can blend, build up, push, pull, and scrape. Artists can use these brushes to create dry and semi-transparent brushstrokes, reveal or hide paper texture, and blend brushstrokes naturally.
In addition, artists can displace and carve paint, creating indents in the brushstrokes.

6. Abstract Portraiture
In abstract portraiture many of the facial features are abstracted out, color modified or removed and sometimes the person is hardly recognizable.

7. Loose
Loose painterly style has a loose and expressive approach to the process of painting in which the brushstrokes are visible and small details omitted. The edges of the shapes are often blurred. Painters achieve this style by applying large brushes which makes it impossible to paint very small details.

8. Classical
Classical painting style is referring mainly to the style of renaissance painters. During that period painters didn't have the bright colors available today. Their colors were muted, often earthy brownish ones. They also used often dramatic light when part of the face was lit and the other one very dark. The background was often dark as well.

9. Contemporary
Contemporary painting style is not easy to define. It is often very expressive and in which painters project their own emotions onto the canvas. It often elicits strong response of the viewer by forcing her to try to decode the mystery and the intent behind the painting.
